Martin Wins Arizona Fuel & Gas Nationals
and 2nd NHRA Championship
For the second year in a row the Jam Air Motorsports MULTISTACK / PROLONG Blown Alcohol Funny Car has won the Hot Rod Heritage Series 7.0 Pro Championship. Coming into the final points race of the season they had an 81 point lead on Richard High from Lake Havasu City, AZ. The team would have to out qualify him or win one round to clinch the 2010 Championship. When Richard High was a no show at the event the Jam -Air team would secure the Wally for a second year in a row.
In dominate fashion the MULTISTACK / PROLONG Funny Car was running strong all season. With wins at the March Meet and Rockabilly Rod Reunion in Vegas and semi final finishes the Sportsman Shootout in Fontana and the Nostalgia Reunion in Sacramento. They would leave the Arizona Fuel & Gas Nationals with a win as well.
"Coming into the event I was a bit nervous. We had been chasing a couple gremlins since Vegas." said Martin. "For our car to run as good as it has while chasing these gremlins shows how good our team really is."
With the hot Arizona weather, qualifying would begin in 108 degree temperatures. First session of qualifying the Jam Air car ran a 7.05 which would put them # 2. Before the second session they decided to go for it and laid down a 6.985, too quick for the 7.0 index. The MULTISTACK / PROLONG Funny Car would remain #2 on the ladder.
In the first round of competition the team had Ferrera. He had been having trouble getting down the track all weekend. At the hit, Martin had the jump. Will clicked it about half track and slowed to a 7.80 at 106 mph for the win. The Jam- Air Special would have a bye in the second round which would put them straight into the final against Mike Smith. This final round would be a rematch of the Sportsman Shootout final in Fontana, which had gone to Smith. This time Martin would take the win light with a 7.08 against a red lighting Smith.
The Jam Air Motorsports MULTISTACK / PROLONG Blown Alcohol Funny Car would leave the last points race of the season with a total of 487 points and a second NHRA Championship Wally. "Winning our second championship in a row is unbelievable. Growing up all I dreamed about was wanting to drive a funny car. No where in my wildest dreams would I have thought we would be back to back NHRA champions." Martin says after winning.
Next stop for Martin and his team will be the California Hot Rod Reunion at Auto Club Famoso Raceway, October 15-17th. They will be there to defend their 2009 7.0 Pro Title.
